Buying Tips for Women in the Market for Inline Skates

Consider Your Skill Level

If you’re new to skating, consider starting out at your local roller rink. You’ll be in a more controlled environment, with handrails and plenty of places to hold on to while you get comfortable.

Before heading outdoors, focus on learning how to control your speed—and most importantly, how to stop. Once you start gliding on skates, it’s a whole different world. Add some music, and suddenly you’re floating along in your own lane.

A Great Beginner-Friendly Skate Option

There are some terrific inline skate brands available right now that won’t break the bank. A great place to start is the Rollerblade Lightning.

If you prefer the comfort of a slightly wider boot, you’ll appreciate the Lightnings. (They originally came out in the early ’90s.) Even though they run wider, they still offer a snug, responsive fit that delivers solid performance. They’re comfortable right out of the box and work well for both recreational and fitness skating.

Boot Support Matters

In my opinion, a hard shell boot is the way to go—especially for beginners. Soft boot skates tend to flex and don’t provide the ankle support you’ll want when you’re starting out. Your ankles will appreciate the added structure of a hard shell, particularly at the upper cuff where a secure fit really matters.

The Rollerblade Lightnings also feature a removable liner with two eyelets for lacing, allowing you to tighten things up for extra security.

Sizing with the Rollerblade Lightnings

Rollerblade makes sizing easy with their dual-size design. For example, if you’re a women’s US 8, you can choose an 8.0 / 8.5 shell. If you want a tighter fit, you can insert a special sizing insole under the main insole, effectively dialing the skate down to an 8.0.

It’s a smart design, and I personally use a similar setup with my Rollerblade Twister Edge XT skates.

Wheels & Hardware

The Lightnings feature durable buckles, shock absorbers under the insoles, and 80mm wheels with an 85A durometer—a great setup for beginners. These wheels perform well both indoors and outdoors.
